Er hat mit der Komposition wahrscheinlich 1825 begonnen und die Symphonie 1826 der Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde in Wien gewidmet, die sie aber aufgrund ihres Schwierigkeitsgrades nicht aufführen konnte. Erst 1828 gab Schubert sie nach kurzer Überarbeitung in Druck. Das Charakteristische an dieser Symphonie ist ihr Beginn: Die ersten acht Takte der einprägsamen Melodie werden nur von zwei Hörnern vorgetragen - ein Klangbild, das für den Beginn einer Symphonie bis dahin untypisch war. Ein weiteres Charakteristikum ist die später so bezeichnete totale Durchführung, d. h. die thematisch-motivische Arbeit findet nicht nur im Durchführungssatz, sondern von Anfang an statt.
